Cotton fabrics are gaining in popularity, especially earth-friendly and naturally colored ones. The price for raw cotton has reached new levels due to a worldwide shortage.

Naturally Colored Cottons

All cotton bolls aren’t white or off-white. These come in many shades. The colors include yellow, green, blue, pink, rose, and a variety of tans and browns, including a beautiful reddish-brown. Naturally colored cottons have been around for perhaps four thousand years. These are native to the Old and New World. Several species of cotton yield colored fibers. Colored cottons are most commonly grown in the Caribbean, Central and South America (especially Peru), Africa, and India. Fabrics made from these fibers have been available since the 1980s.

In some respects these unusual cottons are superior to conventional cotton. They’re considered sustainable. These varieties can be grown as perennials rather than being replanted every year.
